Protection is a city in Comanche County, Kansas with a population of 514. Protection was founded in 1884. Popular support for a protective tariff in the 1884 presidential election caused the name of “Protection” to be selected. The first post office in Protection was established on August 27, 1884. The town became nationally and internationally known via radio and television in 1955–1956, when the National Polio Foundation chose it as the center for the free distribution of Salk vaccine shots for polio. It then became 100 percent contained.

Protection is found in the beautiful Gypsum Hills (also known as the Gyp Hills, Red Hills & Medicine Hills) are a region of rolling hills, mesas, canyons and buttes in central Kansas, just north of the Oklahoma border. The area has many red cedar trees and the ground contains iron oxide or rust, hence one of the area's other names, the Red Hills. Protection is located in the heart of Unit 16 which is one of the most popular trophy deer and wild turkey hunting areas in the State of Kansas. Hunting season brings an influx of guests to this area for their hunting trips. The area also enjoys very good quail and pheasant hunting.

Oil and gas development and wind power farms also bring regular guests to the area. Many of those have enjoyed their stays in the Protection area.

The city of Protection provides excellent public schools and a welcoming small town atmosphere. Protection, Kansas is located only 62 miles to the southeast of Dodge City, Kansas, 62 miles to the north of Woodward, Oklahoma and only 143 miles southwest of Wichita.

Not many nice town or country homes in Kansas, such as this one, come available in this price range. This is an opportunity to live and work in a safe, comfortable Kansas community.

Recreational opportunities abound with a short 14 mile drive to Coldwater Lake which is located near Coldwater, not far from the famous the Red Hills Scenic Byway. The city lake and park is situated in the rolling hills and woods of the scenic Gypsum Hills region of the state. The surrounding area offers rugged beauty and stunning vistas.  Coldwater Lake is the best kept secret in Kansas and very popular with people of Southwest Kansas and Northwestern Oklahoma.

The 250-acre lake and 930-acre park provide anglers and outdoors people with lots of enjoyable activities. Annual fish stocking is handled by the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission. The lake is located next to a beautiful 10 hole golf course, with very low green fees.

This area of Kansas is known for its farming and ranching operations.  There are jobs available in this area of the state for agriculture, oil and gas, as well as wind energy.

According to the Kansas Regional Center, some of the most important factors in choosing a place to live is lifestyle, safety and ease of finding jobs.

“You're looking for a place with a low cost of living, nationally ranked schools and picture-perfect communities. But you also want a place with world-class dining, great nightlife and wide-open spaces for outdoor adventure. It isn’t always easy to find that combination. But that’s exactly what you get in Kansas.

In Kansas, we don’t just live life. We live life to the fullest. We’re big on business and economic development, but we know how to relax and have a good time, too. We’re balancing work and play, progress and history, urban and rural to create a quality of life you can’t find anywhere else. And that’s what makes this place so special.

The cost of living in Kansas is nearly 8.7 percent below the national average, making our state among the most affordable in the nation. From food and gasoline to property taxes and car insurance, most of what you need costs less here. Housing costs are especially low, with the median value of owner-occupied homes nearly 35 percent below the national average. In fact, Kansas is ranked among the most affordable places in the country for buying a home. The bottom line is this - your dollar goes further here.”

As Native Kansans, we couldn’t agree more.  Come see why the Sunflower State should be your home too.
