In the late 1800's gold was discovered in the Little Rocky Mountains, prospectors flooded the area and the mining towns of Zortman and Landusy were established. It is estimated that the Zortman-Landusky mines have produced over $450 million in gold in the last 100+ years. The mines are currently closed but the area sees regular visitors that come to pan for gold.  The community of Zortman see's regular visitors from across the US because of the vast array of recreational opportunities the area offers including hunting, hiking, atv trails, gold panning, and camping.  The Charles M. Russel National Wildlife Refuge and the sought after Missouri River breaks are just minutes away and offers some of the best big game hunting and wildlife viewing in the United States.
