When an average person thinks about hunting, they might think about deer, elk, duck, quail or other popular birds. Whether for food or sport, hunting is a pastime for many Americans. But many people don’t realize there are a lot of other exciting big game opportunities in the United States.

If you have the passion, and the license, for hunting, here are some game animals to try at least once.

Pronghorn. These animals are commonly confused with antelope, but they actually are more closely related to the goat than the antelope. Pronghorn are an exciting hunt because they are the fastest animal in the western hemisphere, reaching speeds of up to 55 miles per hour. They are largely populated in states like Wisconsin, Montana and Wyoming, but can be seen as far south as Texas.

Moose. In the United States, you can typically find moose in the northern part of the country (and even more so in Alaska). They make for a big target, growing to about seven feet tall and as much as 1,500 pounds. It’s best to hunt these animals in early fall before the bulls start rutting. You’ll enjoy the “beef of the north.”

Grizzly Bear. Grizzly bears are massive and can be very aggressive, making them a little more difficult to hunt. You will mostly find them hanging around rivers or lakes in search for salmon. They are heavily regulated on where you can hunt them so make sure you check state regulations. Your best bet is in Alaska or Montana.

Bighorn Sheep. These sheep can have horns weighing up to 30 pounds and can live anywhere from the Northern U.S. to Mexico. Many of them stay in the desert because they have a short body stature. They don’t like to wander in snow and stay on steep slopes to avoid doing so.

Dall Sheep. If you want an exciting and thrilling hunt, try hunting the Brooks Range in the Rocky Mountains where you’ll find Dall sheep. The Dall’s don’t have anywhere to hide in this mountain range, making it easy to find them. However, be prepared to come face-to-face with a lot of other wildlife and endure long hikes at high altitudes.

If these animals don’t excite you enough, there are a variety of options all over the United States for hunters to explore year-round. Happy hunting!
