Owning a piece of recreational property can open the door for a variety of opportunities. Many times, it means having access to lakes, streams, rivers or even the ocean. With so many options for water sports, kayaking can be a great choice due to it being an affordable and fun activity.
There are many different types of kayaking that you can do depending on your skill level and environment: Kayak touring, sea kayaking, white water kayaking, kayak surfing and freestyle kayaking. Touring and sea kayaking are the more relaxing versions of kayaking where you can enjoy the scenery and visit with the area wildlife. White water, surfing and freestyling are versions for more advanced kayakers who want a bigger adrenaline rush.
No matter what level you are as a kayaker, there are a few important tips to remember.
Select a boat that fits your purpose. There are kayaks that fit one, two or three people. Once you’ve picked the right kayak, it will be a lot easier to stroll around in the water.
Dress for the water. Take the temperature of the water in consideration when choosing your attire. The water temperature can be very different than the air temperature. Put on layers of quick drying clothing and make sure to wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Sandals with straps or water shoes should be worn on your feet at all times.
Be prepared in case of capsizing. Always have rescue and safety equipment on hand for use in case of a rescue situation. And always wear a life vest. A good idea is to take a class to learn all of the basics before attempting to kayak on your own.
Just remember, in case of an emergency, you are more important than the boat. You can always buy another kayak.
