Cathedral beamed ceilings and lots of windows add to the charm. The first floor has a full bath w/a clawfoot tub and 2 bedrooms. Upstairs loft area is used as the master w/its own bathroom. Outside you will find beautiful garden spots and room for your animals if you wish. Larger shed conveys with the property along with some fencing. With its current population of around 1000 people, the town of Machiasport was first settled around 1630. One of the most notable events in Machiasport’s history occurred during the American Revolutionary War. Machiasport played a pivotal role in the early naval efforts of the American colonies. In 1775, the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War took place near Machias, at what is now known as the Battle of Machias. The battle involved a group of colonists who fought British forces in an effort to seize a British supply ship, the Margaretta. This victory, while small, was a significant early success for the American colonists in their struggle for independence. Machiasport and its surrounding areas became a strategic location during the Revolutionary War because of their proximity to the British-controlled maritime routes. The town’s residents were heavily involved in the American Revolution, providing supplies and support to the cause. During the 1800’s shipbuilding was in high demand along with the local fishing industry. The area was very dependent on the sardine industry and canning for years. Now the lobster trade and salmon are popular for the area fisherman. Fort O’Brien State Historic Site – Machiasport, Maine Fort O’Brien (also known as Fort Machias) is a historic military site in Machiasport, Maine, that played a role in multiple conflicts, including the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. History of Fort O’Brien 1. American Revolution (1775) -Fort O’Brien was originally established after the Battle of Machias in 1775, which was one of the first naval battles of the American Revolution. -After local patriots, led by Jeremiah O’Brien, successfully captured the British schooner Margaretta, the British sought retaliation. To defend the Machias River, the Americans built a small fortification near the present day site.- In 1777, the British destroyed the fort during an attack, but it was later rebuilt. 2. War of 1812-The fort was reconstructed and manned during the War of 1812 to defend against British forces. -However, in 1814, British warships once again overpowered the fort, bombarding it before forcing an American surrender. 3. Civil War (1863-1865) -Fort O’Brien was rebuilt once more during the Civil War as part of coastal defense efforts. -While it was never directly attacked during this period, it served as a deterrent to Confederate raiders and foreign threats. Jasper Beach is almost across the road from this property, offering a great small rock beach, rolling waves.. the sound of the water rolling the “jasper” makes a very interesting sound! The pubic sand beach at Roque Bluffs state park is about 20 min away, besides the ocean side beach, there is a fresh water pond to enjoy as well as the picnic/play area and some trails to hike.
