Calais is the second city in Washington County.  It is a border town with St. Stephens, New Brunswick and is another short drive from Perry – just 18 miles away.  Calais offers numerous choices for shopping and eating out.  And while you are there – check out the State wide famous Mardens Discount store who’s moto is “I should have bought it when I saw it at Mardens” – They have a little of everything for the DIY or crafty person.

It is easier to list what Washington County does not have. It does not have: a lot of traffic lights (only three in the whole county), an interstate, a Red Lobster Restaurant, or poisonous snakes. Known as the Sunrise County, Washington County welcomes the first rays of sun to shine on the US each day. With tides averaging between 18 and 22 feet, the bold, salt-sprayed shoreline of Downeast Maine offers deserted beaches, quiet hiking trails, rugged cliffs, and unnamed beauty.  Truly one of the last frontiers on the Eastern seaboard, one does not have to go far to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. With 2 cities, 44 towns, and a population of approximately 32,000, Washington County is larger than the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined.

Thousands of acres of land have been preserved for the public to access the waterfront, hiking trails, biking, and exploring.  The Sunrise Trails begin in Calais and go all the way to Ellsworth.  The trails are great for hiking, biking, ATV riding, and horseback riding in the spring, summer and fall and then snowmobile riding, and cross- country skiing in the winter.
