Protection is a city in Comanche County, Kansas with a population of 514. Protection was founded in 1884. Popular support for a protective tariff in the 1884 presidential election caused the name of “Protection” to be selected. The first post office in Protection was established on August 27, 1884. The town became nationally and internationally known via radio and television in 1955–1956, when the National Polio Foundation chose it as the center for the free distribution of Salk vaccine shots for polio. It then became 100 percent contained.
Protection is found in the beautiful Gypsum Hills (also known as the Gyp Hills, Red Hills & Medicine Hills) are a region of rolling hills, mesas, canyons and buttes in central Kansas, just north of the Oklahoma border. The area has many red cedar trees and the ground contains iron oxide or rust, hence one of the area's other names, the Red Hills. Protection is located in the heart of Unit 16 which is one of the most popular trophy deer and wild turkey hunting areas in the State of Kansas. Hunting season brings an influx of guests to this area for their hunting trips. The area also enjoys very good quail and pheasant hunting.
Oil and gas development and wind power farms also bring regular guests to the area. Many of those have enjoyed their stays in the Protection area.
