Idaho is an amazing destination to get your one-in-a-lifetime trophy. The state is known for its strong populations of elk, mule deer, and whitetail, along with black bear, mountain lion, and pronghorn. With over 60 percent of Idaho being public land, there is plenty of space to roam. Many people make good use of the public lands, but some choose private lands for better success and to avoid encounters with other hunters. The most popular places to hunt are the Boise River Zone and the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest.
Idaho has four distinct seasons, with hot, dry summers to cold winters. The landscape in Idaho changes quickly, from forested mountains in the north to open desert and sage country in the south, giving hunters a wide range of terrain to work with. Early snow is common in the high country, pushing game down to lower elevations as the season progresses. In many areas, the season starts in late summer and stretches into December, allowing plenty of time for both resident and nonresident hunters. If you love the backcountry lifestyle, Idaho has plenty to offer.
