Ohio has earned a strong reputation among whitetail hunters, consistently producing mature bucks and high harvest numbers. Archery season starts in late September and runs through early February, giving bowhunters one of the longest stretches in the country. Gun season is shorter but still productive, especially in areas where agricultural land meets thicker cover. While deer remain the primary focus, Ohio also supports turkey, small game, and limited waterfowl hunting.
Much of Ohio’s hunting takes place on private land, though about 740,000 acres are public access through wildlife areas and state forests. Mild winters and a strong hunting culture make it an accessible and rewarding place to own land. Some of the more popular spots to hunt at are Wayne National Forest and Woodbury Wildlife Area, with a combined 260,000 acres to hunt. For sportsmen looking for trustworthy land, Ohio continues to be one of the Midwest’s most dependable hunting states.
