Wisconsin has long been known as one of the top whitetail deer hunting states in the country, and for good reason. With a mix of farm country and northern forests, it supports a healthy, widespread deer population. The annual gun deer season is almost a statewide holiday, drawing hundreds of thousands of hunters into the woods each fall. Bow and crossbow seasons stretch much longer, giving residents and nonresidents plenty of time to be in the stand. Beyond deer, the state also offers opportunities for black bears, turkeys, and waterfowl. Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is one of the more popular hunting spots where all species can be hunted.
Public land is widely available, particularly in the northern part of the state, and through programs like Managed Forest Law and Voluntary Public Access. Southern Wisconsin is more private, but many landowners lease or allow access through local connections. The climate delivers cold, snowy seasons up north and milder conditions farther south, influencing where and how hunters approach their season. Hunting is deeply woven into Wisconsin’s culture and remains one of the most anticipated parts of the year. It’s a state where both tradition and solid game numbers keep the woods busy each fall.
