There’s nothing more relaxing that enjoying fishing on a nice day, especially if it’s on your own property. But if you haven’t quite gotten your feet wet yet and explored different types of fishing (and using different bait), we’ve got you covered.

Here are some of the best and easiest bait options to use for beginning fishermen.

Live bait

Worms. Worms are the most popular bait used in the United States. They are also very affordable. If you’re fishing in fresh water, worms will help you catch just about any type of fish like bass, trout and panfish.

Minnows. Minnows can be a little bit challenging, but they are great for catching big fish. Smaller minnows are great for fish like trout, crappie and perch. Larger minnows will help you catch bigger fish like walleye, largemouth bass, catfish and pike.

Insects.  Although uncommon, insects like grasshoppers and crickets are readily available no matter where you go. They are also great bait for small streams when fishing for trout, crappie and blue gill.

Lures

Curly tail grub. One of the most versatile lures, the curly tail grub can be used on its own to catch blue gill, crappie or small bass, or you can attach it to other lures to attract bigger fish.

Floating Minnow. Made to look like the live version, the floating minnow can work the surface and beneath. It is made to intimidate injured baitfish and can help you catch the big one in the end.

Spro Hair Jig. With weighted heads, the hair jig can easily navigate through grass and rocky areas. The hair feature also makes it more appealing in the water. These are best for catching crappie, grouper or snapper.

Now that you’re geared up with the appropriate bait, grab a friend and head to the water. It’s fish for dinner tonight. Happy fishing!
