When it comes to hunting, there are a lot of tools you need to be successful. One of the most essential tools is a trail camera. Cameras will help you learn the about the animals in the area you’re trying to hunt. You’ll be able to see details about the deer and observe their behaviors without leaving a scent or startling them.  Below are some tips on how you can get the best shot and collect the most information.

Face the camera in the right direction. Since the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, it’s best to not have your camera facing those directions. The sun can cause serious glare, washing out any subjects in your shot. If you do face it towards the sun, hang the camera higher and point it down to avoid the glare.

Set up a lick in the camera shot. By setting up a lick near the camera (in the line of view), the deer will pause long enough that you can get a good look at them.

Find the food sources. Placement is key. If you want to know where all of the deer move to and from, find where their food sources are. If you can find an area plentiful of fruits, nuts and low growing plants, you’re bound to catch deer and other animals hanging around.

Label your cameras and SD cards. If you have multiple cameras set up and you’re trying to review the footage, it’s easy to get your SD cards mixed up out in the field. By labeling them with each

camera number, you will avoid getting them mixed up in different cameras and save the confusion of not knowing what you’re watching.

Leave the camera alone. Try not to check the camera too often so you don’t change the natural habitat of the area. You can also scare off the deer from coming back. It’s advised to check your camera every three weeks or so for best results.

These are a few tips of many that can help you get that perfect shot. With proper preparation and knowledge, trail cameras are a great tool to make your next hunting season successful.
