Otis is a town with a population of about 845 people, with a
lot living around the lakes. Beech Hill Pond is 1351 acres with a maximum depth
of 104 ft. It is one of the high quality cold water sport fish lakes in the Union
River drainage chain and is well known for lake trout. Having a state record trout
weighing in at 31.5 lbs way back in 1958 as just one little piece of local history
to share!
The town gets its name from Joseph Otis, as in 1835 the people
met to draw up the plans for incorporation. It was approved in March 1835 and Otis
became the 227th town in Maine, but it was first settled around 1805.
On record at one time, it is said that the town had 5 sawmills
running at the same time and apparently there were 8 total over the years. These
mills made shingles, barrel staves, clapboards and all types of lumber.
One of the main attractions that Otis had, and still has, is Beech Hill Pond, Springy
Pond, Burnt Pond, Rocky Pond and Floods Pond. These ponds attract many fishermen
and boaters and are enjoyed by many campers. Some of the campers have enjoyed Otis
so well that they have made it their year-round residence.
