Philipsburg Montana
Philipsburg MT is located on the Veterans Memorial Scenic Highway between Anaconda and Drummond on MT HWY 1 and was founded in the 19th century as a mining town. Many of the historic buildings have been restored and remain. Nearby you can mine for Montana Sapphires on your own, or you can get help from many different shops/vendors that will set you up to be successful. The Sweet Palace is famous for hand crafted candy, and is a must visit when in the area.
Anaconda Montana
Anaconda is the couty seat of Deer Lodge County with a population of just over 9,000 people. Anaconda was founded by Marcus Daly, one of Butte MT's Copper Kings, who built the famous Anaconda Smelter to process copper ore from the surrounding mines. The 585 foot Smelter Stack is still standing and was the tallest masonry structure in the world at the time. The Jack Nicklaus designed Old Works Golf Course, built on the site of the Old Works Smelter, is a world class facility and has hosted many local tournaments including both US Amateur Qualifiers and US Open Qualifiers. The Washoe Theater is the last Art Deco Style Theater built in the US and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Though it was built in 1931 the doors didn't open until 1936 due to the Great Depression. The Smithsonian rates the Washoe Theater as a national treasure due to the lavish interior.
