If you’re looking to purchase land, or are already a landowner, exploring that land should be on the top of your to-do list. The best way to do that is to hike the property.

Before heading out on the trails, it’s important to be informed on proper protocol, safety instructions and other issues so that a routine hike doesn’t turn deadly. Hiking has many different variables to consider from weather issues and terrain changes to possible wildlife encounters. Here are some tips to keep in mind before you head out on your next hike.

Get the right gear. Having the proper hiking shoes/boots and clothing (layers are helpful) is pretty obvious. Make sure you’re creating a checklist of some other important items you’ll need on the trail like a map, rain gear, sun block, first-aid supplies, water and snacks.

Get familiar with the trail. Heading out on a trail you have never hiked before and are completely unfamiliar with isn’t the best idea. Once you select a trail, get a map of the area and any other information you can obtain. Make a note of any intersecting trails so that you don’t make a wrong turn.

Check the forecast. Depending on where you live, the weather can change within minutes from sunny to windy and rainy. Check the forecast for your area in the days leading up to your hike and then again within an hour or two before to make sure you’re prepared.

Prepare for wildlife encounters. During a hike, you’ll probably get up close and personal with some beautiful wildlife, but some of those animals can be potentially deadly so you need to know how to handle a dangerous encounter.

Tell someone where you’re going. Even if you’re not hiking alone, which we suggest a hiking buddy or two, make sure you’re letting someone who isn’t with you know where you are going. It’s always best to let them know estimated time you’ll return and even set a time to “worry.”
