If you\u2019re looking for a new and exciting recreational activity, look no further than spelunking, or caving, as some call it. \u00a0Spelunking allows you to explore caves and grottos in a variety of different ways like ziplining, climbing, walking or rappelling.<\/p>\n

There are so many perks to spelunking, from discovering unique rock formations, diverse wildlife and even beautiful underground waterfalls. However, there are a lot of unexpected twists and turns you need to be prepared for. Here is some advice for those up for the adventure.<\/p>\n

Use the buddy system<\/strong>. You\u2019re going to be underground and far away from any medical help or hospitals if any accidents do happen. Always take a friend (or two or three) with you. The recommended group size is five from the National Speleological Society.<\/p>\n

Wear the right clothing<\/strong>. At bare minimum, wear long sleeves and pants (synthetic materials are preferred over cotton) to protect you from scrapes. Sturdy hiking boots, elbow pads and knee pads will also be extremely helpful. And lastly, always wear a helmet.<\/p>\n

Bring extra gear<\/strong>. Add these important items on your list to bring: flashlight and helmet light with extra batteries, gloves, a first aid kit, water (and snacks) and a camera to capture nature\u2019s beauty.<\/p>\n

Know what you\u2019re doing<\/strong>. When you\u2019re underground with narrow passages, deep water and uneven ground, you want to know how to navigate that type of environment. Know your limits, check the weather beforehand and take an experienced guide with you.<\/p>\n
