The Cacao and Del Medio farms are part of the\u00a0forestry project<\/span>\u00a0owned by the company Compa\u00f1\u00eda Agr\u00edcola Bosques de Monterreal S.A. The\u00a0farms<\/span>\u00a0are located in the province of Guanacaste, the second-largest province in Costa Rica, specifically in La Cruz County, Santa Cecilia District.<\/p>\n Geographically, the properties can be located on the cartographic sheet of the I.G.N. OROSI No. 3149-III between the CRTM05 coordinates: – Cacao Farm: horizontal 346324, 348280 and vertical 1216006, 1214729 – Del Medio Farm: horizontal 348035, 347550 and vertical 1217124, 1216980. The farms are situated 8.2 km southeast and 4 km southwest of the town of Santa Cecilia.<\/p>\n The Cacao Farm is the\u00a0largest,<\/span>\u00a0with a total registered area of 55.012590 ha.\u00a0Del Medio Farm has a total registered area of 9.2417 ha.\u00a0Access to the farms is via National Route No. 4 (North Atlantic Corridor) on a paved road up to the town of\u00a0Santa Cecilia.<\/span>\u00a0From there, one continues 5.7 km on a gravel road toward Upala, then takes a detour toward the Las Brumas community, continuing 7.5 km on a dirt road that is passable\u00a0throughout the year<\/span>.<\/p>\n Our plantations, over 20 years old, are located in the northwestern corner of Costa Rica, bordering\u00a0Guanacaste National Park<\/span>. Part of our vision has been to contribute to an ecological corridor that connects the\u00a0Pacific Ocean<\/span>\u00a0with Lake Nicaragua and the\u00a0Atlantic Rainforest<\/span>, thus linking three distinct ecosystems. This is a\u00a0high-value forestry<\/span>\u00a0project, focused on the production of \u201cgourmet\u201d timber species with strong\u00a0conservation value,<\/span>\u00a0based on the rehabilitation of forest ecosystems.<\/p>\n The\u00a0sustainability\u00a0<\/span>of your new forestry investment also considers the future potential income from ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, water production,\u00a0biodiversity<\/span>, and scenic beauty. Birds (such as toucans) and mammals (such as tapirs) help disperse many\u00a0high-value species<\/span>\u00a0of the tropical rain and dry forests.<\/p>\n These Costa Rican projects began with the establishment of\u00a0forest plantations<\/span>\u00a0under a different scheme than those traditionally used in Costa Rica. It was designed to recreate the dynamics of a natural forest, where pioneer species prepare the site for subsequent ones, maintaining the\u00a0Costa Rican ecological richness<\/span>\u00a0that comes from a diverse mix of forest species\u2014which also benefits local fauna. The\u00a0natural forests<\/span>\u00a0within the farms were protected and conserved from the beginning.\u00a0<\/p>\n Like many properties in the region, the farms were initially used for cattle ranching and agricultural crops, which were later abandoned due to low productivity caused by soil degradation and economic factors. Currently, these farms have been\u00a0reforested<\/span>\u00a0with a mixture of native and\u00a0exotic species<\/span>\u00a0under a mixed system.\u00a0<\/p>\n The simplicity of traditional\u00a0forest plantations<\/span>, compared to the diversity of tropical natural forests, can be addressed through ecologically diverse and\u00a0sustainable plantation<\/span>\u00a0designs. Mixed plantations can develop a dynamic and structure similar to natural forests by incorporating species from different ecological guilds, fulfilling complementary ecological functions. These designs combine native and\u00a0exotic species\u00a0<\/span>of fast, medium, and slow growth, along with natural regeneration management of other forest species.\u00a0Mixed plantations\u00a0<\/span>promote greater biodiversity regeneration by creating a\u00a0variety of habitats<\/span>\u00a0that favor seed dispersers, germination, and growth of numerous species. Species selection has been crucial, based on growth dynamics and shade tolerance, to ensure that no species is suppressed.<\/p>\n The plantations are composed of heliophilous, durable heliophilous, and sciophilous species, organized in layers according to ecological requirements. Depending on composition, either even-aged or uneven-aged structures were pursued. Through photosynthesis, these plantations provide not only\u00a0carbon fixation and storage<\/span>, but also scenic beauty, soil and water protection,\u00a0biodiversity,<\/span>\u00a0and climate regulation.<\/p>\n \u00a0Forest\u00a0plantation establishment<\/span>\u00a0began in 2003 with species such as\u00a0Mahogany<\/span>\u00a0(Swietenia macrophylla) and\u00a0Cedar<\/span>\u00a0(Cedrela odorata). In the following two years, many other species were added, including: Acacia mangium (Acacia), Araucaria hunsteinii (Klinki), Astronium graveolens (RonRon), Brosimum alicastrum (Ojoche), Calophyllum Brasiliense (Mar\u00eda), Carapa guianensis (Caobilla), Ceiba pentandra (Ceiba), Cespedecia macrophylla (Tabac\u00f3n), Cordia alliodora (Laurel), Dalbergia retusa (Cocobolo), Diphysa americana (Guachipel\u00edn), Dipteryx panamensis (Almendro), Dialium guianensis (Tamarindo), Enterolobium cyclocarpum (Guanacaste), Hieronyma alchorneoides (Pil\u00f3n), Hymenaea courbaril (Guapinol), Jacaranda copaia (Para\u00edso), Manilkara chicle (Nispero), Minquartia guianensis (Man\u00fa), Penthacletra macroloba (Gavil\u00e1n), Platymiscium parviflorum (Cachimbo), Platymiscium pinnatum (Crist\u00f3bal), Persea spp (Aguacatillo), Samanea saman (Cen\u00edzaro), Simaruba glauca (Aceituno), Schizolobium parahyba (Gallinazo), Sclerobium costarricense (Tostado), Spondias mombin (Jobo), Tabebuia guayacan (Cortez Amarillo), Tabebuia rosea (Roble Sabana), Terminalia amazonia (Roble Coral), Virola koschnyii\u00a0koschnyii (Fruta Dorada), Vochysia ferruginea (Botarrama), Vochysia guatemalensis (San Juan), and Zanthoxylum kellermanii (Lagarto).<\/p>\n All these species produce\u00a0highly valued timber<\/span>\u00a0for various uses, and some yield fine,\u00a0endangered woods\u00a0<\/span>in certain regions.
