Calais is one of two cities, the other being Eastport, located in Washington County, Maine.  The city borders St. Stevens, New Brunswick, Canada and offers three border crossings.  The two countries are separated by the St. Croix River which flows down to the Passamaquoddy Bay and into the Atlantic at the beginning of Fundy Bay.  The river is a deep river which accommodates shipping. The crossings into Canada are located just 15-20 minutes from the property, making this a great location for a home base to explore the surrounding areas natural beauty and of course all the summer festivals like the Birding Festival, Pirates Festival, Salmon Festival.

Washington County also knows as the Sunrise County as it includes the most easterly point in the United States and that is where most believe the first rays of sun shines on the continental US.  It covers 2,258 square miles (2,563 sq, miles of land and 695 square miles of water). The population as of 2010 was 32,856 which works out to about 13 people per sq. mile making it the third least populated county in the state.
