Mad Ann Bailey, scout, spy, and Indian fighter lived in a hut located near what is now the RV barn. A well-known colorful character: there is a Virginia historical marker on a stone at the driveway commemorating her heroism. A scout, spy, and frontierswoman, she fought in the colonial Indian wars and the Revolutionary War. She survived being attacked or captured by Indians by pretending to be crazy-hence the name “Mad Ann”. She is credited with saving Fort Lee by riding 100 miles through the frontier to Lewisburg to get gunpowder, making the round trip in a record 3 days’ time. To this day, no one knows how she accomplished this seemingly impossible feat. It is thought that Ann spent winters in Warm River Cave.

Throughout this Virginia mountain property, you will find heirloom apple trees, Virginia Tech researchers have collected and preserved seeds from these rare trees.  It is thought that these trees grew from apples cores that were tossed out as pioneers crossed the mountains.  They also provide a tasty snack for the deer and bear.
