Settled in the mid 1700’s, it was incorporated as a town in 1832. Machias was famous for its lumber trade and ship building. This home has easy access to the “Rails to Trails”, the Downeast Sunrise trail system that runs from Charlotte to Ellsworth along the old rail bed, this is open to walkers, bikes, 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, horseback riding and skiing, and can be reached at the end of Center St extension. Bad Little Falls Park and the University of Maine are very close to this property, as well as the area restaurants, post office, schools and the hospital. Other close by areas of interest to be enjoyed are the beaches, Roque Bluffs state park is about 15 min away, 274 acre park offers a long sand beach on the ocean side and a fresh water pond on the other with a play yard for the kids. Jasper Beach is about the same distance in Machiasport with its small rocks is a great place to visit, walk and picnic. The Culter Bold Coast reserve land is about a half hour drive out, that offers 12,000 acres of wilderness, trails and beautiful ocean views.
