The highway was dedicated in 1921 to soldiers of World War I, and connected New York City to San Francisco.  The town of Maybell itself was founded in the 1880's by May Bell, the wife of a local cattleman.  

Despite its small size, Maybell boasts a vibrant community spirit and a wealth of outdoor recreational opportunities. Fishing enthusiasts flock to the Yampa River to try their luck at catching trout, while hikers and nature lovers explore the surrounding hills and mesas, soaking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The Yampah River flows slowly through the area attracting wildlife and visitors alike. 

This is rugged Colorado. It's land that's covered by sage brush, cedar, juniper, and ponderosa pines. Lots of canyon carve through the terrain and the wildlife if more abundant than humans. The remoteness of the area attracts residents and visitors alike, including the Wild Bunch Outlaws… the story today is a little more tame and includes, hunters, fisherman, and bird watchers. Maybell is a small ranching community with a school, restaurant, gas station, general store and post office. The post office has been in operation since 1884! 

Nearby attractions include Brown's Park a 13,500 acre wildlife refuge. These protected wetlands are home to over 200 species of birds including bald and golden eagles and peregrine falcons. A herd of over 600 wild horses calls nearby Sand Wash Wild Horse Management Area home.
