Showing Cattle: Behind the Scenes

If you’ve ever been to a fair or rodeo where cattle are being shown competitively, you might already know that there’s a lot more to it than just looks. The background and preparation leading up to the show can be a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Showing cattle can give you a sense of responsibility, added patience, confidence, good sportsmanship and even a greater respect for animals. Walking on the stage for just a few minutes of judging is the end result of hours and hours of daily washing and grooming, exercising and training.

So, what goes into training to show cattle?

Finding shows.

Shows normally take place at a local or state fair. You can check your local FFA and 4-H chapters for upcoming events or even your extension office for a local university.

Halter breaking.

This means earning the animal’s trust and respect. To do this, you have regular interactions with the livestock and develop a routine with it. The key is compassion.

Leading.

Start small with short distances by using gentle pressure to teach your animal to respond.

Showmanship.

Not only grooming the animal’s coat and hooves, but getting yourself groomed and clean cut for the judges. Be confident, but humble.

Now, let’s talk about responsibility. If you live and/or work on a farm or ranch, responsibility is instilled all-year round from learning about production, the agriculture industry, cattle genetics and reproduction and more. There’s also the financial responsibility practiced on a farm and ranch. Trips to the vet, food and other unforeseen expenses add up. Using this knowledge and adding hard work makes for a good showman.

Many of the children, teenagers and young adults who grow up showing cattle end up pursuing a degree in agriculture.  The hard work and dedication that goes on leading up to the events go far beyond your local or state fair, it builds a solid foundation for the future of all who participate.
