In its 2020 State Agriculture Overview of Oklahoma, the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported there are 68,595 square miles of land – that’s almost 44 million acres – in the state. Given that 34.4 million of these acres are devoted to ranches and farms, Oklahoma’s major role in U.S. agriculture certainly makes sense. The state is covered in pastures with native grasses, timberland with mixed hardwoods, and tillable farmland for row crops.
Oklahoma’s geography allows for significant production in cattle and calves, broiler chickens and hogs, as well as wheat, corn, hay and soybeans. The 445-acre per farm/ranch average in the state is noteworthy (by regional comparison, more than Missouri’s 290 acres but less than Texas’ 510).
