When you have a home in the country, most likely you have some extra acreage that you aren’t utilizing to its fullest potential. Whether you have a few acres or 100, your land is full of opportunity to have some fun with your family or earn some extra income. Below are a few ideas that you can use.

Create a community garden. Building a bigger, community garden not only provides fresh produce for you and your family, but also feeds your neighbors. It also allows other community members to assist with maintaining the garden (so you don’t have to do it all yourself).

Become a beekeeper. With honeybees on the verge of extinction, it’s important that we keep them flourishing since honey is an important stable in many dishes and is also used medicinally. Bees are fairly low maintenance and you can make a little extra cash if you bottle and sell the honey and beeswax.

Go green. Adding solar panels to your property is a big investment, but it offers tax breaks and lower utility costs in the long run. Many areas are also looking for land to install a wind turbine, which can also generate income and lower utility costs.

Build a recreational trail. Whether you like to hike, bike, ride ATV’s or all of the above, a trail where you can do these things on your own property is something you and your whole family you can enjoy. You can also host competitions or events for the community if you have enough space to generate some income.

Build more. If you have the funds, the possibilities are endless on additions you can build on your property. Build a warehouse for storage/space, add a greenhouse for your garden or build a guest cottage. You could also build stables and add some horses.
