Fire Proofing Your Country Home

Weather conditions can be very unpredictable. From flooding to wildfires, it’s important to know how to protect your home and your family from devastation.

To keep your home protected, there are many things you can do both inside and outside to prevent fires from happening. Here are some things you can do now.

Outside

Roofing – Install a fireproof roof. Also, always keep gutters and roofing clear of any brush and debris that can easily catch fire and cover your chimney with fire proof netting.

Yard – Clean your yard of any brush and debris as well, especially any dead trees or limbs. Make a “barrier” around your home that is free of flammable vegetation. Keep trees and bushes trimmed and watered.

Home and farm equipment – Use caution when using any equipment like tractors or lawnmowers that can cause a spark if not properly maintained.

Planning – Always have an evacuation plan/escape route in place. Get to know all of the streets and paths around your home and make sure your home and streets are easily identifiable.

Inside

Install smoke detectors in every room and test them monthly to ensure proper function.

Know escape routes for every room in your home and practice these routines at least once every year.

Establish an emergency communication plan for your family. Everyone should know who they need to contact in case of an emergency and memorize necessary phone numbers (with 911 at the top of that list).

Keep any flammable items away from heating vents and space heaters.

Use flashlights instead of candles during power outages and if you do use candles, never leave them unattended… even for a minute.

Have routine safety inspections for your home. Check electrical wiring, heating and cooling units and electrical outlets are working properly.

As always, just use common sense when preparing your home for fires. Educating yourself and your children on best practices as well as creating a plan will keep your family and home from dealing with devastation.
