Pest Proofing Your Home for Spring
It’s no secret that living in the country often brings more pests like bugs, spiders, moles trying to invade your space. Before calling the exterminator and spending hundreds of dollars to keep those pests outside, there are plenty of things you can do yourself that should do the trick. Check out some of the most effective and common ways below.
Keep the yard clean. If you have extra debris in your yard, stacks of firewood or compost bins, those areas are perfect homes for many different types of bugs and could give them easy access to your home. Keep your yard clean and clear by removing debris, pruning any bushes near the house and removing any standing water.
Fill the gaps. Check your basement, windows and doors for any gaps and cracks. Repair them or seal them with caulk to keep bugs from creeping through.
Clean the kitchen. Bugs and other pests are attracted to leftover food and messes. Keeping your floors and counters free of food and crumbs (this includes spills) will keep bugs from sneaking in for a snack themselves. Also, keep excess food stored in sealed containers or in the refrigerator.
A dry home is a bug free home. Not only do bugs want food, they want water as well. Bugs you find in the bathroom or basement like spiders, silverfish and centipedes prefer damp areas. In areas that can get wet, run a dehumidifier and make sure you fix any leaky faucets or drains.
Time to spray. Early spring is the perfect time to spray the outside (and inside) of your home with a protective barrier. Most sprays that you can buy at the store last up to six months, although you might reapply every three to be safe.
