Is Flood Insurance Worth it?

With many parts of the country dealing with the devastating effects of recent flooding, many property owners are revisiting the idea of getting flood insurance. Flood insurance is different than homeowners insurance. If your property is damaged from precipitation, your home insurance will not cover the cost of the repairs.

Most people who live in flood zones like on the coasts or near rivers and lakes are required to get flood insurance, however, there are still thousands affected by flooding each year. If you are even in a moderate risk area for flooding, there are many facts to consider when deciding if you want to go ahead with purchasing insurance.

First, water damage is extremely costly. Just one inch of water can cost up to $20,000. One foot of water can exceed $70,000. If you own a single family home under $250,000, flood damage will cost more than your home is worth. It also takes less than a foot of water to carry away a small vehicle and even less to sweep away a person. The bottom line is that flooding is not only dangerous, it’s extremely costly. And with more than half of the U.S. having at least some risk to flooding, insurance isn’t a bad idea. It’s also very cost efficient. Coverage ranges from a little over $100 for low risk areas to more than $1200 a year in high risk areas. The cost also depends on if you are getting just building coverage or if you want to add personal property coverage as well.

If you’re undecided on whether or not to get flood insurance, do your research. Look at FEMA’s latest flood maps, the history of flooding events in your county/zip code, and how much coverage will cost you. If you want to save on your premiums, many times you can do some proactive steps to help protect your home that will lower your monthly premiums. Check out the National Flood Insurance Program standards for more information. By knowing the risks you might face and knowing your options, you’ll be able to make the best decision for you and your family.
