Living in the country definitely has many perks, but one obvious downfall is being farther away from any grocery stores. The good news is that living off the land is becoming more popular. Living off the land means relying mostly, or solely, on natural resources like water, food and power. So, if this is something you want to do, here are some things you need.

Fresh water. If you’re living in the country, chances are you don’t have to worry much about fresh water. But if you are wanting to go completely off-grid, there are a few ways you can get fresh water, from harvesting rainwater to using wind or solar power to supply your home.

Food source(s). Expand your current garden to add more vegetables and crops. You can even add a greenhouse to your property to grow in the winter. Put your hunting and fishing skills to the test if you want some meat in your diet. Another idea is to learn how to preserve and can your own food.

Power. Adding solar panels to your home can be a little bit costly upfront, however, it will save you money in the long run and is better for the environment. Some other options to consider is using a fireplace or wood-burning stove for heat and cooking or even adding a wind turbine to your property.

Emergency kit. Situations can arise at any moment and you and your family’s safety and health are of upmost importance. Create an emergency kit full of medical supplies, emergency contact numbers and a plan of action in case there is an emergency.

Positive attitude. Making the transition to live off the land can be stressful and a big change. Keeping a positive attitude and maintaining your commitment to the process is key.
